The Big Apple Fest is a philanthropic art exhibit designed to promote tourism to new york city and raise money for city based non-profit organizations including City Harvest, the Police Athletic League, and NYC & Company Foundation.
The five Nordic Countries of Denmark, Finland, Icelnad, Norway and Sweden joined the Big Apple campaign. The Apple "Go Scandinavia," designed by Finnish Artist Rea Nurmi, depicts summer sailing on the Baltic Sea archipelago that is common to all five countries.
The Apple was located at midtown location on the corner of 42nd street and 3rd avenue for two months. In December 2004, the Apples were auctioned at Sotheby's.
In addition to "Go Scandanavia," Rea donated her time and efforts on "Harlem Apple" representing the NYC skyline and painted by the children of Harlem PAL center at 119th street and Manhattan Ave.
